Rattikorn Hewett (nee Boonyavatana) received a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Iowa State University (1986). Her M. Eng. Sc. in Computer Science from the University of New South Wales (Australia) (1979), and a B.A. (Hons) in Pure Mathematics and Statistics from Flinders University (Australia) (1977) were sponsored by full scholarships from the Australian government. Hewett was a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University (1987-1990), and a recipient of the National Science Foundation Research Initiation Award (1993-1997). She was a research scientist at the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition and a faculty member at Washington State University Vancouver, and Florida Atlantic University, where she received recognition as an Exceptional Professor. She joined the department of Computer Science at Texas Tech University (TTU) in 2004, where she is presently a full professor.

Hewett's current research and teaching interests can be divided into three groups:

  • Software security informatics and economics, automated software engineering in enterprise and embedded systems, network vulnerability analysis, software risks and safety in healthcare and large-scale information systems, trust computing and social informatics;
  • Machine learning and data mining, bioinformatics and computational biology, empirical software engineering for software reliability and testing management;
  • Intelligent agents, intelligent control and multi-agent systems; qualitative, model-based and causal reasoning; blackboard systems; diagnostic, knowledge-based and decision-support systems

Hewett has established a research program on Capability Engineering at TTU to apply and enhance Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques for emerging problems in software automation and security in large software intensive systems. Some of her ongoing research projects include: (1) Security architectural analysis of large-scale networked information systems, (2) Automated tradeoff, negotiations and decision support systems, (3) Intelligent data understanding of scientific and genomic data. Other previous sponsored or collaborated projects include: classification of genetic phenotypes of Osteogenesis Imperfecta (with Stanford Medical Informatics), prediction of Lake Okeechobee inflows (with South Florida Water Management Districts), intelligent domain-specific software synthesis control, and software architectures for intelligent real-time monitoring controls applied to hospital intensive care units and nuclear power plant systems. Funding sponsors include Shelton Foundation, NSF, Florida State, NASA, IBM, DARPA, and EPRI.

She has authored/co-authored over 100 technical papers including peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings, and book chapters. She has also served as a referee for several journals including IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, Journal of Software Engineering and Knowledge Engineering, Journal of Computational Intelligence in Bioinformatics, Journal of Experimental and Theoretical AI, and Journal on Pattern Recognition and AI.

Hewett currently serves on the editorial boards of Advances in Artificial Intelligence, Journal of Computational Intelligence in Bioinformatics, International Journal of Computational Biology and Drug Design, and Scientific Journals International. She has served on program committees of numerous conferences; some of the recent ones being the IEEE Conference on Tools with AI (ICTAI'07), IEEE Symposium on Bioinformatics & Bioengineering (BIBE'07), Conference on Availability, Reliability, and Security (ARES'08, 07), Conference on Software Engineering and Knowledge Engineering (SEKE'07), Conference on Software Engineering Research, management and Applications (SERA'07), Conference on Software and Data Technologies (ICSOFT'07), Conference on Computational Intelligence (ICCI'07), Conference on AI and Soft Computing (ASC'07), IEEE MUE'07 (International Conference on Multimedia and Ubiquitous Engineering) workshop on Smart Living Space, ICML'05-06 (International Conference on Machine Learning) workshop on Learning and Extending Lexical Ontology by using Machine Learning methods, and the ACM 7th International Workshop on Data Warehousing and OLAP (DOLAP'04).

Hewett has designed and taught graduate and undergraduate courses in Artificial Intelligence, Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining, Intelligent and knowledge-based systems, Design and Analysis of Algorithms, Automata and Formal Language Theory, Database Systems and research seminars in Software Security, Automated Software Engineering, Blackboard systems and related topics.

Her present and past affiliated professional societies include the Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), American Association for Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), International Association of Science and Technology Development, Phi Kappa Phi, and Upsilon Pi Epsilon.
